The poet Ernesto Cardenal states |
|
I have read the book “Another God is Possible,” and I liked it a lot. I also found it entertaining – it is a book that makes you laugh, for it has much humor in it. It makes use of caricatures to show how Jesus’ teachings have sometimes suffered distortion in the churches. It is a solid attack against religious fundamentalism, which exercises so much influence among our own people (and among all peoples). Fundamentalism is believing everything in religion literally, even the things that are clearly symbolic fables or fictitious narratives. People who are more knowledgeable or educated in religious matters are no longer fundamentalist, although all of us were that way at one time, at least when we were children, and many of us continue to be so a good part of our lives. I don’t like the way some of the passages in this book are presented, such as those on the divinity of Jesus, the eucharist, and the resurrection. But the work wasn’t written for me, and I don’t have to be in agreement with everything in it. In any case, I congratulate the authors for their work.

The book is magnificent! I started to read it, and it really hooked me. It is well put together and quite truthful. Your book is fresh, courageous, well-documented, sensible, respectful – it’s a jewel for all kinds of readers. I hope that it’s a great success and does a lot of good. Ah, and as a “correspondent” … you can call on me again whenever the need arises! Dr. Pepe Rodríguez Professor of Investigative Journalism at the Universidad de Barcelona

Ivone Gebara, Brazilian theologian |

Dear María and José Ignacio: Your programs are excellent. You can’t imagine how much I enjoy them. Yesterday I shared some of them with my 88-year old uncle, who is sick. He asked me to send you congratulations. He felt really good about them, and with each new interview he said to me: “That’s really great, but the Vatican isn’t going to like it!” I was delighted to learn that the series is going to come out in Portuguese. Also, I would like to thank the journalist Raquel for calling me from Nazareth, and I also want to thank Jesus for supporting my theology! Many thanks for your valuable work. Dom Pedro Casaldáliga talks about “Another God”: |
|
They say there are those theologians who answer questions that nobody asks … and there are those who try to answer questions that all of us ask. María and José Ignacio, you belong to the second category, and your program is really a great response to people’s real concerns and disappointments, and also their expectations. You approach the mystery of God and his Kingdom with humor, realism, and mature freedom, and you do so concretely, on the basis of Christian faith and a positive, critical reading of the Bible and of history. I imagine there will be plenty of people who will tear their garments after hearing the program. It is also understandable that the program will need to be presented carefully when being offered to communities with less up-to-date formation. You have done very well in adding to each interview “more information about this polemical topic.” In any case, you are providing a wonderful service to the Kingdom of God and to its main promoter, Jesus of Nazareth. And now that scientists are counting the years until the ecological cataclysm, it is good to remember that the Second Coming is the first, and the second, and the third, and all the many comings of God to his sons and daughters in all parts of the world. A strong embrace in the subversive peace of the Gospel. MATO GROSSO, BRAZIL
